The Medal for the Defense of Kiev was awarded to all those who took part in the defense of the City of Moscow. It was awarded to servicemen and civilians who took a direct part in the battles for the city. It was also awarded to underground fighters in Kiev and the partisans of the Kiev Region.

This decoration was established in May 1944.
