The Air Force Cross is the Air Force equivalent of the Distinguished Service Cross which the Air Force had continued to award to its personnel when it became a seperate service branch. It is awarded for acts of extraordinary heroism not justifying the Medal of Honor.

This decoration was authorized in July 1960.
