Coast Guard Silver Lifesaving Medal

The Coast Guard Silver Lifesaving Medal is awarded to any person who rescues or endeavors to rescue any other person from drowning, shipwreck or other peril of the water. The rescue must take place in waters within the United States or subject to its jurisdiction or one of the parties must be a citizen of the Unoted States and the resue or attempted rescue must have been made at the risk of the rescuer's own life.

This decoration was originally established in June 1874 and redesigned in 1949.
