Spanish American War Service

The Spanish American War Service medal was an award for military personnel who served with the Army between April 20, 1898 and April 11 1899, but were not eligible for the Spanish Campaign Medal. This medal is sometimes called the "National Guard Medal" because of the recipients were members of these units. The obverse features a Roman sword on a tablet with the inscription "For Service in the Spanish War", surrounded by a wreath.

This decoration was authorized in July 1918.
