The DOJ Federal Bureau of Prisons Meritorious Service Medal is awarded to an individual (civil service or Public Health Service) who has demonstrated meritorious service on the basis of a highly significant achievement in research or administration, a
continuing period of meritorious service throughout an individual's career, high quality, initiative in leadership, or exhibition of great courage in hazardous work or in an emergency. The BOP MSM is the second highest non-cash award given to a BOP employee for contributions in care and custody.
