Coast Guard Commendation Medal

The Coast Guard Commendation Medal is awarded to members of the US Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserves and to other members of the US Armed Forces, serving in any capacity with the Coast Guard, for heroism, or meritorious service resulting in unusual and outstanding achievement rendered while the Coast Guard is under the jurisiction of the Treasury Department.

This decoration was authorized by the Secretary of the Treasury in August 1947. In its original form it was only a ribbon bar - the medal pendant was not created until July, 1951. In October 1959 it was re-designated as the Coast Guard Commendation Medal.
